IED in Iraq
I have been corresponding with someone who's a massively talented hardware hacker and he has this to say about IEDs in Iraq:

I was connected via a soldier on Iraq who sent me a picture of
the radios they are using to set off the IEDs. Some of them
are using FRS radios (Family Radios). The picture I saw was
a Motorola TalkAbout 5000 (or something like that).

What I did was make a FRS radio connected to a 7 watt external
amplifier, and with a BASIC stamp controlling the main function
buttons of the radio. It will hop through all 838 possible codes
(22 channels, 38 privacy codes) and transmit for 1 second on each
channel. Hopefully setting off the bombs before they drive through.

To which I wrote and reply this is what was said:

> Alright. It seems like a slow process but a surefire one if they're
> using the right kind of radios.
>
> This seems to be the kind of thing a HERF device would actually be
> useful for. Assuming you've got the right people over there, I imagine
> they can get that radar system :-)

Yes, that is another problem... they use whatever is available.
But cellular phones and FRS radios seem to be the most popular.

A HERF/EMP device would actually probably be a pretty good idea,
but controlling the beam pattern might be a problem.

BTW, here is pic of an IED using a cellular phone. A good GSM900
jammer might not be that bad of an idea to bring along:

If anyone has any information on IEDs in Iraq, I would love to hear about it.

I really wish I had brought a GSM jammer with me. Or an EMP. Or a HERF device of any sort. Or a bullet proof vest.

Most military convoys have GSM jammers now.

Also SOP when you find an IED is to not key up radios near it, for obvious reasons.

I think you shouldn't venture too far if you have no armor or weapons or ID. Have fun up north.

funny enough, there doesnt seem to be a single part soldered on, it all looks hot-glued and taped together, suppose thats probably one of the reasons they are called improvised. I really wish the picture was better but I guess there probably isn't much else left of the thing.

feel free to pass along any information you find out, this interests me.

Bullshit. s/Most/Almost no/

There are some public press releases and articles related to something called Warlock Red and Warlock Green. I'd look at those articles. Can't tell you more, sorry, except that I'm on my second combat tour and have only ever seen one of those in training.

> I think you shouldn't venture too far if you have no armor or weapons or ID.

I agree.

Soldiers are no longer authorized to drive off compounds in Afghanistan or Iraq in unarmored vehicles. (Does it happen?) Whether that armor is itself also improvised where you're going is a question I don't know the answer to. When I left Iraq in early 2004 the incoming units were taking the steel plates we'd jerry-rigged to the sides of our vehicles to use as their own. My unit has since acquired real armor that will protect us in many conditions. Should you be held to a standard that the U.S. has deemed too unsafe for their soldiers? Fuck no. If you're in a military convoy, insist in riding in an armored vehicle. If you get a choice, choose an "Up-armor". This is a humvee that was designed with armor, as opposed to most of the humvees that have armor slapped on as an afterthought. An easy way to tell is that the windows on Up-Armors slide down. On the new armor they're fielding to previously un-armored humvees, the windows slide back about 6".

As a civilian, I would also refuse to ride in the first or last vehicle in the convoy, which are the two vehicles most likely to become a statistic (the latter before the former).

Weapons: Larger than a sidearm? I haven't seen one civilian or DoD employee (except PSD) carry weapons at all, much less anything larger than a pistol. Also, unless you have personal body armor issued by the government that looks exactly like what everyone else is wearing, if you brandish a weapon during some sort of violent dispute (IED or direct attack) and can't be immediately identified as a U.S. Civilian or DoD employee or whatever by a soldier who has never seen you before, you're quite likely to be shot. Several times. In the face.

If you somehow end up with a sidearm, I'd recommend only drawing long enough to shoot it in the course of saving your life or the life of another.

Disclaimer: I also spent most of my time in safe houses and not around a lot of civilian/DoD employees, so maybe it's more common than I've seen. Iraqis carrying AKs are common, they're usually security guards for buildings and complexes. Also, every household is authorized one pistol and one AK, unless things have changed.

> Have fun up north.

Indeed. It'll be an experience. :)

Happy travels!

No Non-Tac outside of compounds?

"Soldiers are no longer authorized to drive off compounds in Afghanistan or Iraq in unarmored vehicles. (Does it happen?)"

I can't vouch for Iraq, but as someone currently stationed in Afghanistan (for the last 10 months in fact), I can tell you without a doubt that the up-armored vehicle or and Tactical Vehicle for that matter is a rare sight on the road for the US forces. I convoy 4-5 days a week and the only time I see armor is when I take missions with the PSD, and then only on the Generals vehicle. The VAST majority of US soldiers are convoying in Ford Rangers, Toyota 4-Runners, and Toyota Land Cruisers. NO ARMOR WHATSOEVER. It is this very fact that took the lives of four very close friends and fellow soldiers three weeks ago when their vehicle came in contact with an anti-tank mine that had surfaced in the recent rains. There is absolutely no order or statement to the effect of authorized travel outside of a military compound save that you must have at minimum 2 vehicles with 2 personnel per.

Armor, what a novel idea.......

*sigh*... really, a Chevy caprice and some moxie are all you need. After all the dire warnings, I'm starting to fear you'll find it boring here. It really is quite beautiful, and the weather is perfect now. But soon I won't have to drop encouraging comments in your LJ, because you'll have seen it for yourself. And although last end of summer/fall was pretty bad, that was the worst of it. This has been my home for nigh-on two years now, and the armor only keeps you from seeing the beauty of the place. So does living behind a wall. Not that soldiers don't have good reason for their precautions - they are the ones fighting the war after all - but as a civilian you will be able to see and appreciate a lot more of the culture.

The devices are a lot better and more crude than you can imagin. we train with what we think we might run into, but the bottom line is that when some smart guy comes up with a cool new way of doing a device. He shows as many unimportant people how to do it. You would come up with cruel shit too if all you did all day was thinking how to kill people.

Shaped Charges: A cylindrical container is packed with explosive, and capped by a conical piece of metal that becomes a molten projectile when the device is detonated. The shaped charge concentrates blast energy to punch through armor plating and propel the molten metal into the target vehicle's cabin

These are unstoppable and will go through anything and everything. They are best set off with trip wires and other hidden triggers, so all the talk about jamming is not that helpful nowadays.

Not to scare anyone, but this is what IEDs do to armor

IED Jammer or IED Initiator
(Anonymous)
2006-07-20 03:30 am UTC (link)
In order to initiate a radio controlled ied, i thought that the transmission from the walkie talkie carries several radio signals, thereby acting as a safety feature to prevent regular radio communications from setting off the ied.

Does anyone know if this is true?

I heard that the better way to handle ieds is to jam them with an ied jammer or rcied jammer.

Can anyone confirm that?

yes an ied jammer will jam the radio receiver that is connected to a blasting cap on an ied. the ied jammer will temporarily neutralize the ied while in its proximity, assuming the ied jammer is in a car or suv and you are travelling with the jammer on. check out http://www.bombjammer.com to learn more about rf jamming using an ied jammer.
